The Roosevelt College Choir was founded in 2004, together with the foundation of University College Roosevelt (UCR).

Previous Conductors

Elisabeth Blom

Elisabeth Blom studied choral conducting at Rotterdam Conservatory with Wiecher Mandemaker and graduated in 2009. She continued her studies with Jos van Veldhoven at the Royal Conservatoire in the Hague and with Rob Vermeulen at the Utrecht Conservatory. From 2006 - 2009 she took part in four editions of the Kurt Thomas conducting course, where she conducted their professional chamber choir and orchestra. In 2014 she took the conducting master class with the professional chamber choir Studium Chorale.

As part of her training as a professional singer, Elisabeth Blom took master classes with Margareth Roest, Esther Putter, Connie de Jongh, Harjo Pasveer and Rita Dams. At the moment she is being coached by Hanneke de Wit.

In 2015 Elisabeth Blom founded The Zed Chamber Choir and The Zed Consort, both professional vocal ensembles established in Zeeland. At present she holds the position of conductor of the Achterhoeks Bachkoor.

She was conductor of the Roosevelt College Choir in Middelburg from 2008-2016, Zeeuws Vocal Ensemble in Goes, Ars Vocalis in Delft and The Leiden Choristers from 2002-2015 (formerly: Ruach). The latter won the competition of the national choir festival in 2012 and was proclaimed “Choir of the Year 2012”, as it won the competition in both the categories youth choir and adult choir.

Elisabeth Blom performs on a regular basis as a soprano soloist. She is herself a member of the professional chamber choirs Cappella Amsterdam, Studium Chorale Maastricht, Laurens Collegium Rotterdam, The Netherlands Bach Society and Bachkoor Holland.

Christian Blaha

Christian Blaha studied composition with Alexandre Hrisanide (a pupil of Nadia Boulanger in Paris), choral conducting with Louis Buskens and piano with Joop Albracht and Paul Komen at the Brabants Conservatorium in Tilburg, and orchestral conducting with Ed Spanjaard in Amsterdam. For both choral conducting and composition he was awarded a Master of Arts degree cum laude. He participated in master classes with Alfred Reed, Menachim Breuer and Romain Bischoff, whom he assisted at the Dutch Vocal Laboratory.

Blaha received commissions from the Nederlands Promenade Orkest, the Limburgs Symfonieorkest, Pianoduo Post-Mulder, Nieuw Amsterdams Peil, and Belcanto Strings (Daniel Raiskin). He composed over 80 works (including three symphonies, operas, chamber music and choral works). At present he is working on his fourth symphony ‘The great War 1914-1918’ and on a song cycle with Peter Slager from the famous Dutch band BlØf. He is also an all round arranger who made arrangements for Rik Mol, Stephan Geusebroek and Glennis Grace.

Christian Blaha is founder of the professional chamber orchestra Zeeuws Kamerorkest TY - where he worked for almost ten years as chief conductor - and the semi-professional chamber choir Melopoëia. Furthermore he is conductor of Middelburgs Kamerkoor and accompanying pianist of Koor Lichte Muziek A58 with whom he won the national choir festival competition in the category ‘groot koor lichte muziek’ in 2008 and 2010.

Blaha was conductor of the Roosevelt College Choir from 2007-2008. At the moment he is working on his PhD with Prof. dr. Clement.
